How It Started

The Naturalist began the way a lot of good things do — by paying closer attention. A drawing here, a species fact there. A growing awareness of how little we know about the plants and animals around us, and how quickly some of them are disappearing.

We started making shirts and totes to spark curiosity. A way to carry something beautiful — and meaningful — into the world. Each design highlights a species that deserves a second look. A name to learn. A reason to care.

Why We Exist

The Naturalist is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. That means every product we sell helps fund conservation education, species awareness, and habitat protection.

We’re not here to build an empire. We’re here to support the work that really matters — in the classroom, on the trail, in the marsh. Small-scale, long-view, quietly determined.

How We Work

We collaborate with scientific illustrators to make sure our goods do more than just look nice — they teach, inspire, and connect.

We use organic and recycled materials where we can, print with water-based inks, and try to make only what’s useful, durable, and worth holding onto.

What We Believe

We believe that noticing is the first step to protecting. That beauty can open doors to science. And that people are more likely to take care of something once they’ve learned its name.

We also believe in staying small, being useful, and letting the work speak for itself.

What’s Ahead

We’ll keep making products that support the mission. Keep funding the work that protects species and ecosystems. Keep offering little invitations to look more closely at the living world — and hopefully help it last a little longer.
