The axolotl’s defining biological marvel is neoteny—reaching full sexual maturity without ever undergoing metamorphosis into a land-dwelling salamander.

Those prominent pink "horns" flaring from their heads are actually external gill stalks lined with microscopic filaments. By fanning their gills through the water, they extract oxygen without ever needing to come ashore.

When hunting, axolotls use a vacuum-snap attack. Lacking true teeth, they walk along lake bottoms and open their wide mouths instantly creating a sudden pressure drop that sucks prey whole directly into their stomach.
