Venus Flytraps grow in sunny, wet savannas, bogs, and longleaf pine habitats with sandy, acidic soil. These soils are low in nutrients, which is why the plant relies on insects for added nitrogen.

They need open sunlight, clean water, and natural disturbance such as periodic fire to keep taller plants from shading them out.


Behavior

Each trap is a modified leaf. When a small insect brushes the trigger hairs inside the trap, the plant waits for a second signal before closing. This helps prevent the plant from wasting energy on raindrops or loose debris.

Once the trap seals around prey, digestive enzymes break it down over several days. Afterward, the trap reopens and waits again.

Though famous as a houseplant, the Venus Flytrap is a rare wild species with a very limited native range.
